Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Fleshy herbs.

Stems: Stems 1 to several, red, erect or ascending from a repent base, coarse and stout, 20–50 cm long, 6–20 mm in diameter toward base, usually branched in upper part, internodes 1.5–7(–13) cm long, densely to sometimes sparsely hirsute, the hairs 0.6–0.8(–1) mm long.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled or opposite, occasionally alternate on lower stem. Blades broadly elliptic–obovate, broadly elliptic, rhombic–elliptic, or suborbicular, (1.5–)4–10 cm long, (1.2–)2–4.2 cm wide. Apex broadly obtuse to rounded. Base cuneate to broadly cuneate or sometimes rounded. Upper surfaces glabrous or sometimes sparsely hirsute at base, especially on midrib; lower surfaces moderately hirsute, sometimes sparsely so; dark green on upper surface; lower surfaces pale green, often with red intercostal areas, thick and succulent, drying coriaceous. Margins entire. Palmately 5-veined, usually with an additional pair of lateral veins above middle of blade. Petioles (0.3–)0.9–2(–2.5) cm long, densely hirsute, upper surface more sparsely so, sometimes glabrate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in spikes (1–)several, terminal or sometimes axillary, 3.5–8 cm long, the rachis 4–8 mm in diameter, glabrous, flowers densely congested, peduncles 0.4–0.8(–1.5) cm long, glabrous or sparsely hirsute. Flowers bisexual (perfect), perianth absent. Each flower subtended by a peltate bract. Calyx (sepals) absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 2. Ovary superior, obovoid–turbinate, 1-carpellate, 1-celled, apex ± oblique; ovules 1 per cell, orthotropous, erect; stigmas 1–4, terminal.

Fruit: Fruit obovoid; ca. 1.2 mm long; papillose–viscid with sessile glands. Seeds 1 per fruit; with scanty endosperm and copious; starchy perisperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 28*

Habitat: Wet forests.

Elevation Range: 610–1,690 m.
